Crowley Rice Cottage II
Historic Business District

This circa 1899 building, one of the oldest wooden structures in Crowley’s business district, was originally located directly beside the railroad track. In 1906 the Frisco Railroad Company bought the property of its former location to build its proposed depot. The structure was moved one block to its present location. Throughout the building’s existence, several owners and various businesses were housed in the building, including a vegetable market and pharmacy. Some say it served as the railroad station before a permanent station was constructed. In the early 1900’s, Crystal Barber Shop occupied the building, remaining so until the 1980’s.

Upon entering the “secret garden” style gate, visitors are embraced by a tropical plant lined path leading to the enclosed courtyard. Palms, crepe myrtles, azaleas, magnolias and gardenias lend a New Orleans ambiance to the patio area….complete with an outdoor dining table and gas grill. The screened porch with comfortable rocking chairs and a ceiling fan make this space even more enjoyable. Listen to your favorite music while relaxing…an indoor/outdoor speaker system allows you to play tunes from your smart phone or CD's.
A side door from the garden area brings you into the den/kitchen area. Warm colors and walnut floors surround you. Relax in the leather recliner to enjoy books, magazines or watching cable TV or a DVD. Historical Louisiana coastline and railroad maps adorn the walls. The kitchen features a stainless steel island with stools for dining. There is a commercial triple stainless sink, refrigerator with ice maker, gas stove, microwave, dishwasher and garbage disposal. Travertine counter tops with a stone and glass tile backsplash complement the glazed ivory finished cabinets. All of the “tools” necessary for preparing and serving a gourmet meal are at hand! French doors lead from the kitchen out onto the screened porch.
The back hall, adjacent to the den, houses a full length mirror, perfect for “checking your look” before an evening out! This hall opens on a (king) bedroom with luxury bedding and a flat screen TV. The bedroom overlooks the courtyard and has a door leading onto the screened porch. A well lighted and appointed bath with bronze fixtures features a stained glass window/mirror above the pedestal sink and a tub/shower. A full size washer/dryer and iron/ironing board are in a closet in this bathroom.
